Taranaki Daily News article about Margaret

About Margaret Scott

Margaret Scott was born in Opunake, Taranaki, in 1947 and has lived all her life on the Taranaki coast. For thirty-five years, she lived on a dairy farm with her husband Ian and brought up their four children, painted and helped with the running of the farm. The paintings of cows reflect that time in her life. When her children were very young, she taught polytechnic and art night classes. Later, she became Head of the Art Department at Opunake High School for ten years. She left that position in 2002 to complete her Bachelor of Education degree through Massey University by distance learning.
Margaret now lives at Oakura, a coastal village ten minutes south of New Plymouth. She has built a studio next to her new home, where she paints, runs workshops for adults and extension classes for students. Her work now focuses on the views she has of the Kaitaki ranges, the native plants such as nikau, puka, cabbage trees and flaxes that grow in her garden, and flowers. This new environment, which has beautiful views of the sea, is an abundant resource for creative ideas.
Margaret paints mostly in acrylics and sometimes in watercolours but also loves mixed media to create textural works. She varies her media to keep her work interesting. She has also explored the printmaking techniques of zinc and solar plate etching and often works with clay. She describes her work as personal symbolism, which is based on personally acquired and assimilated experiences of the environment where she lives. She reflects this environment between Mount Egmont/Taranaki and the Taranaki coastline in symbols of the area. Shellfish, especially paua, and the sea feature strongly in her work. They symbolise her childhood memories of growing up on the coast at Oaonui, and Taranaki’s coastal environment.
Margaret has produced many commissioned works and has illustrated a childrens book, Midnight at the Lighthouse, written by Lesley Dowding. In 2015 she wrote and produced her own book called ‘Self Portrait of a Paua’. She is the designer of Jason Products’ Sea Bounty placemats series, which are marketed throughout New Zealand and overseas. She has for sale a large range of prints and cards produced from her original work. Margaret paints mainly in acrylics.
